Mandolin and guitar for me.

Much farther along on the guitar than mandolin - teacher went off to law school at Wake Forest and was killed by a drunk driver last August - been real hard to pick it up and play. We had a memorial service for Scott with his wife and son and his family with a bunch of his former students. We all got together and played solos or small group stuff. One of his favorite Dead tunes was Brokedown and I played an arrangement I did for mandolin with two other students. That's the last time I've touched my mando. I just can't pick it up.

On the not so bummer side - I play guitar at church - having a tough time getting the music director to play bluegrass on the new pipe organ. We were short some choir members a few weeks ago and couldn't do the planned arrangement for communion. The director pops up over the organ, looks at me and mouths "Play something!!!!"

So for the next 5 minutes or so I noodled "Desolation Row" -after the service several people came up and said that it sounded very nice and that they hadn't heard the song before. I told them it was an old "traditional" tune.

No gigging yet.
